Why Caholic
During Lent we are holding a series of studying and discussing the real meaning of the Apostles Creed. We say it but do we real know what it means?

Come and join us on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. with Msgr. Behan, pastor, in the chapel or Mr. Oscar Llort, Pastoral Associate, on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in the Mary and Joseph rooms.

Renew your faith by attending Why Catholic!

Small Faith Group Project

At the conclusion of the six week Why Catholic program each small faith group is encouraged to do something to build their faith as a group.

Our group expressed a desire to continue developing our small faith sharing with scripture sharing. Though we do have some new people for Why Catholic, most of our group first formed last year at Lent with Healing the Body of Christ and they saw Why Catholic as a further development for our small faith group.

We have subsequently had a couple of people join us when they heard we were studying scripture. We, after discussion of the group's expectations, chose the Paulist Press, Share the Word format.

Even though our number is higher than preferred for small faith group sharing and community development (the ideal being stated as 10 to 12 and we have 21 registered), our average attendance at any given time is about 15, which has allowed for an intimacy among attendees to develop.

This has allowed many participants to share some very personal experiences as to how God has worked in their lives and has left us with some very powerful examples of the living word of God dwelling among and within us based on the sharing questions posed by the program booklet.

We follow the Share the Word format. We begin with prayer and a song that is appropriate to the readings. The commentary on the scriptures is read aloud by the whole group as we do in the Renew programs.

We reflect on the next Sunday's readings with a short teaching on the history and context of the various books of the Bible being covered as well as a history of the development of the written scriptures, literary forms, and the development of the current lectionary. Each attendee brings their Bible and emphasis is placed on each person finding the scriptures in their Bible to familiarize themselves with the Bible. Due to the various translations in the room, we usually read the scriptures from the Lector's Workbook so it will be heard as it will be heard on Sunday, but sometimes share the differences in the various translations. The Psalm is read, as it will be heard on Sunday, but often is read in its entirety due to its beauty.

The group has also been introduced to the Office of Hours in the single volume Christian Prayer and praying the Psalms.

Upon the completion of this current Share the Word booklet, we will resume the study of the catechism with Why Catholic. Upon the completion of the six-week Lenten Why Catholic program our small faith group will continue with sharing the scriptures as proclaimed in the Liturgy through the Easter season.
