Norbert Vollertsen, a German human rights activist who once lived in North Korea, said in Seoul on Wednesday that he had received an e-mail from an international aid worker based in the North's capital, confirming that the junior Kim's portraits were being taken down.

"Since the beginning of August, there is removal of official portrait of Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang and all over the countryside in public places but not everywhere," Vollertsen quoted one aid worker as saying in the e-mail.

Vollertsen also quoted the aid worker as saying that he saw the picture of Kim removed from a building related to the Flood Damage Rehabilitation Committee in Pyongyang on Aug. 4.

North Korean officials told international aid workers that it was "part of refurbishing and redecorating the building," the German doctor quoted the e-mail as saying.
