The total suction head (hs) is defined as the algebraic sum of the suction gauge head (hgs) plus the velocity head (hvs =v12/2g) at point of gauge attachment plus the elevation head (Zs)from the suction gauge centerline to the pump datum. On slurry pump installations gauges at suction are seldom used. The suction gauge reading corrected to pump centerline datum equals the suction head minus velocity head.
