Subject: умиление
Пожалуйста, помогите перевести.

Слово встречается в следующем контексте:
'Я схватил ее руку и прильнул к ней, обливая слезами умиления' (Пушкин, 'Капитанская дочка')
It's a hard word to translate; 'love' is an obvious option but I don't feel it's right: 'love' is a feeling, whereas умиление -- an emotion.

Заранее спасибо!!!

Thank you, Kinsman; it's possible but not spot on; d'you know that feeling when you NEED to find the best possible option?... What do you reckon about making it too words, say, 'adoration' and something else to express that 'tender' side of this emotion?

dropping tears of doting adoration?
it's better to look at the original than second-guessing

to Kinsman:
'it's better to look at the original than second-guessing'
what do you mean? Thank you for your second try, but 'doting' is too strong...

to snikhas:
thanks a lot, but 'delight' is not exactly 'umilenie'
Sorry to be so difficult!

Any other suggestions? Anyone else feels like having a go? PLEASE!..

Sorry about sounding vague. it's better to look at the original translation than trying to guess what would be the most thing to fit in here.

умиление is the emotional reaction to someting moving, touching (in figurative sence :o)). Like cute baby, for example. I'm sure there is some fansy English word for it.

Sky, that's exactly the problem -- there is NO English word to word translation for the bloody thing! (pardon my French)

Kinsman: I should buy you a drink for trying so hard! Thank you. Original translation: 'tears of love'. I'm not happy with that. Я могу умиляться Вашему желанию мне помочь, но мне не обязательно Вас любить.
Affection, adoration and fondness are, probably, the best so far. Thanks very much to everyone, Ladies and Gentlemen. If, in the next couple of days, you have an unexpected revelation re: what else умиление might mean in English, please let me know!

Dear Kintorov, the link is very much appreciated, though it's not clear what I am supposed to see there? It's too big to read through; what exactly did you want me to spot?

"I cannot describe the delicious feeling which thrilled through me at this moment, I seized her hand and pressed it in a transport of delight, while bedewing it with my tears".
(The Daughter of the Commandant, translated by Mary Pamela Milne-Home)

"I seized her hand and bathed it with my tears. Marie did not withdraw it, and suddenly I felt upon my cheek the impression, humid and delicious, of her lips! A thrill shot through my whole being."
(Marie; A story of Russian love, translated by , Marie H. de Zielinska)

причем сам Пушкин в пред. строке не знает, как назвать это чувство :)
"Не могу выразить сладостного чувства, овладевшего мною в эту минуту". что уж тут от переводчика требовать...

nephew, зачем на Александра "Наше все" Сергеича наговариваете?
"не мог выразить своего чувства" Петечка Гринев.

Gauri, find the word umilenie on that page.

How about tender pity?

Alexis aka Althea: you have clearly done some research, thank you very much; unfortunately, there is one little 'but': all the existing translations (including the ones you've quoted) of the Captain Daughter are, to be honest, quite rubbish. I'm proofreading yet another -- and, hopefully, much better -- translation that will be out soon. But thank you, anyway!..

Kintorov: yes, I see what you mean! Thank you very much.

Nephew and Sky: you are both right; только давайте без драки! (although I personally look at this issue from Sky's perspective -- and not just because I like heights..)

And, finally:
Dear Kinsman, I'm afraid I can't afford you -- yet! -- we'll have to wait for the translation to be out. But meanwhile... we've decided that your 'adoration' was the best option. So, many, many thanks for lending us your brain!

Equally, many thanks to everyone who've offered their help; have a good day, guys!
