Subject: Про детей Переводчики повергают в тупик все больше. Можно ли так сказать с тчоки зрения грамматики:I started working as a teacher of English teaching children of 4 – 6 years old. По-моему, old не к месту. Либо: 4-6 year-old children Либо: children of 4-6 years of age. Am I right? |
I started as a teacher of English for children aged 4-6. - имхо |

Yes, Kinsman's variation is certainly the best stylistically. All of the other three you mentioned are gramatically okay, though. |
Спасибо, кинсман! Но Вы мне скажите, этот вариант, который меня смущает (опять :)) правилен или нет? Это не я перевожу. Это типа пробный был перевод другого переводчика. Который опять утверждает, что такой вариант возможен. Возможен он или нет? Ох,чувствую, что пойду я покупать грамматики книжищу... |
2 Francis Fanon: is the variant that I'm concerned about correct or not? |
Имхо неправильно он написал. |
I entered upon my career / began/started my career as a teacher of English for children aged 4 to 6. IMHO |
Вариант не лучший, может быть, но тоже возможный - ...for children at the age of 4-6. |
I started working as a teacher of English teaching children of 4 – 6 years old. I started working as a teacher of English by teaching children in the 4-6 age group. My English teaching career began with my work with 4-6 year-old children. Children of the ages of 4-6 were my first students when I started teaching English. |
oh, sorry... that first one (your version) delete |
My first experience teaching English was with children ages 4-6. |
argh ..... children aged 4-6 |
Nina, just curious, "Why do we need the word 'teaching' in 1 and 2 sentences?" (teacher ... teaching) |
it's just a longer more annoying way of saying it you can leave it out but have to rework the end bit then |
OK, my question was: is the first variant given by the translator correct or not? This is a phrase from her 'autobiography' (that's the first thing we ask people to do if they want to apply as translators/interpreters). I thought that it was wrong but she said that she had heard such a phrase. Since it was already 5 pm, and I had a rough day, I didn't want to argue with her, and I started doubting my 'sense of the language'. So my question was about that first phrase. Will someone say 'yes' or 'no'? |
Grammatically, this sentence "I started working as a teacher of English teaching children of 4 – 6 years old" is correct, but I'd recommend that you change the only one thing "4-6" to 4 to 6. |
Нет, все-таки, нет: нельзя сказать "сhildren of 4 to 6 years old", OF здесь лишнее, или надо именить само предложение, т.е.: 1. I started working as a teacher of English teaching 4 to 6-year old children. 2. I started working as a teacher of English teaching children 4 to 6 years old. 3. без old - I started working as a teacher of English teaching children of 4 – 6 years (плохо, предложение, какое-то незаконченное). Что они пытаются этим выяснить? Если бы мне дали такое задание, то я бы перевел: I started my career as a teacher of English for children aged 4 to 6 / I started working as a teacher of English teaching children aged 4 to 6/4 to 6-year old children. |

another option: ...teaching English to four to six year olds |
Rylena, yточнил у носителя языка, поэтому you are right: 1. I started working as a teacher of English teaching children of 4 to 6 years of AGE (а не OLD). |
Спасибо! Еще раз говорю, что мы такого задания не давали. Я имею в виду конкретно это предложение. Задание было написать о себе на английском вкратце автобиографию. Вот человек и написал... Спасибо всем! |
Я бы все-таки взял 2 первых предложения Кинторова и мой вариант at the age of Дети в возрасте...children at the age of... |
Спасибо, Дезерад, но если Вы посмотрите выше (на мой изначальный пост), то предложенные мной варианты совпадают с вариантами Кинторова. А если Вы посмотрите на мой последний пост, то в общем-то будет понятно, что вопрос был совсем не о разнообразии вариантов перевода. Тем не менее, спасибо за участие. |
