Density Grading

Density grading is used to remove heel particles from heel contaminated CCR platforming catalyst. The process allows a re-use of the low carbon CCR catalyst pellets resulting in significant savings for the refiner in terms of less fresh catalyst purchase, less platinum lease and less noble metal reclaim costs.

In the CCR processes, catalyst circulates through a series of reactors where it builds up typical carbon levels of 5 wt%. The spent catalyst is transported to the regenerators where the carbon is burned off and the catalyst regenerated. A small fraction of the catalyst does not circulate through the reactors though and is held up in the bottom and along the walls of the reactors. Over time, this catalyst builds up carbon levels as high as 40 wt% and is commonly referred to as heel catalyst.
