I asked my workmates, they say I should definately use HAVE, and all organisations actually act as plural entities. They said HAS doesn't sound right. So I wonder why it is different to what you guys are saying |

What do your buddies say about "the United States" ? "the United Nations" ? |
|

Just asked about the United States, they say it is always HAVE, no matter what, if it is an organisation, it is plural. Pretty weird. |

They are probably writers, not readers. |

I can't question the sanity of these guys, they have university degrees, and yeah, they are writers indeed, so have to accept this is right. maybe there is a difference between the american and british english? That would explain the difference. Any thoughts? |
I guess your buddies are native speakers, so that means they never carried about grammar and folks around hear spent really a lot of time on grammar:))) Just kidding:) |

есть разница между BrE и AmE: как правило, в AmE collective nouns - глагол в единственном числе, в BrE - во множественном. |

нефью By "collective nouns" you mean the classical example "The police are baffled." The question pertains to organizations. Can you quote a convincing example of plural in British usage for an organization, company, institute, etc.? |

http://www.adamsmith.org/ The Adam Smith Institute has released a 24 minute DVD tracing the life of the scholar Freidrich A Hayek. Would you believe it is a "collective noun"? Still, it is an organization without any doubt. Would you use "have" in this case? |
By "collective nouns" I mean companies, teams, govts, committees, etc. :) но рыться в сети, чтобы кому-то что-то доказать? извините. |

нефью You are a fake neview. I judge by her previous posts. You don't need to dig into the web in order to prove anything to anybody unless you object to being listed as an unreliable source. |

whohoo! it's kind of getting weird ;) Анатолий Д, спасибо за примеры, завтра буду у моих workmates выпытывать где правда спряталась :) |

I must admit though, when it comes to present tense, just off the top of my head I don't remember ARE being used. So may be it is only relevant in past perfect? Another thing may be this is strictly a kiwi way of saying. That'd be even more weird |
|

В сказанном нефью есть одна правда -- футбольные команды про себя и других пишут во множ. числе, например: Barcelona win through to make Paris date (на сайте Arsenal'a). Та же картина у Chelsea и Manchester United: Про компании и правительство примеры обратные см. выше. |

Вот каково тут спорить -- и за себя, и за ленивых оппонентов приходится искать аргументы. |
|

"relevant in past perfect" You mean PRESENT, as there is no difference in past perfect. This cannot be the case. If you fail to convince your people, I will find more examples for you with present perfect (see above some of them). |
