Subject: принять в штыки

Пожалуйста, помогите перевести.

Выражение встречается в следующем контексте:
Румынские политики сразу приняли эту идею в штыки. (речь о возобновлении судоходства в украинской части дельты Дуная).

there is a good verbial phrase in english, to bristle at, which more or less says the same as prinyat' v shtyki in russian.

well, dis won't cut it. dis means to be disrespectful by over-the-top criticism or insults. i don't think it says anything close to prinyat v shtyki.

to balk at means to stubbornly refuse. prinyat v shtyrki, to the best of my knowledge, implies not just a stubborn, but angry opposition to an idea.

prinayt v shtyki is not to oppose something angrily? i thought it was. but russian is ur native language, slavster, so may be u can explain to me exactly what the expression means? thnx

oppose angrily or belligerently, that's what my native-russian colleague says.

narc, "принять в штыки" means exactly what you say, but that was not my point. In LenaK's text (see above) Romanian politicians "приняли идею в в штыки", but I believe one cannot be quite sure that it was "with anger" that they did so. How can you know what's on someone else's mind?

slavster, i don't seem to get ur point. if i understand the russian expression correctly, i.e. belligerent or angry opposition to an idea, which u've just confirmed, then it only follows that the politicians viewed whatever maritime boundary proposal had been put forward with belligerence/anger. not with insults (as in dis) or stubborn opposition (as in balk at). that's why i offered 'bristle at' at the top of this thread. i don't mean to put u down or anything, please don't take me wrong, just am setting the record straight.

Русское выражение "принять в штыки" означает просто резко отвергнуть, не воспринять совершенно, в упор не желать воспринимать.
Коннотация гнева или злобы тут - факультативна. Она - может быть, а может и не присутствовать. НЕ она является смыслоразличительным атрибутом этого глагола.
Вполне имхо идут оба варианта: bristle at/against or balk at

первое более из области "ощериться на" :-), второе - из области "встать на дыбы"
