The French liked to joke, in the 1970s, about what a terrible mess Great Britain was in, how work-shy its labourers were, how restrictive and backwards in economy was. Well, France today is like Britain in the 1970s. At one end of society, excessively-powerful unions close the doors to competitors. At the other end, an out-of-touch and complacent elite caste shares out the top political and industrial positions among their chums. It is unreformed 1960s corporatism. No wonder the new Arab migrants riot. What place is there for them, in the vice-like squeeze of closed shop unions and elitist bureaucrats? Это профсоюзы или что?
