Subject: Мы знать не знаем и не помним, Could somebody please help me?I was trying to translate the following phrase "Мы знать не знаем и не помним" Literal translation (with online interpreter): I asked a professional translator and she said: My question: |
"I know not and neither do I care" (c) Iris Murdock |
"Знать не знаем" - "we do not know it from Adam". Actually, the connotation here can be "we do not know and do not WANT to know". |

Depends on the context and how it is actually uttered. May be just emphasis, or what the previous answer suggested ("we do not want to know"), or "it's not our business to know," or "this issue is totally irrelevant," and other meanings. More colloquial than official. |
Hmm. A better translation would be "we do not know a(ny) thing" or even "we do not know nothing" to keep it colloquial. If more expressive it could be equal to "we do not know a shit". This is a more or less productive form - "infinitive + not + personal form" used to express minimal-to-nothing activity defined by the verb. Anybody else to add anything? |
>"we do not know a shit". Артикль тут не нужен ни в коем случае. |
> Артикль тут не нужен ни в коем случае. ню-ню... |
Совершенно серьёзно. Особенно - неопределённый. да и определённый с натяжкой. Единственно, можно сказать We don't know this shit - типа "мы об этом ничего не нзнаем" или даже "мы не знаем этого гомнюка" (сорри за...) |
Йист, cf: I don't give a shit to your comment! :-D |
Дело ваше, непонятно только, зачем грубить. |
Хотя, это я погорячился, наверное, Вы ведь в качестве примера. Don't give a shit отличается от don't know a shit. В первом случае артикль нужен. |
Это в качестве лингвистического примера, коллега. Я же указал - cf. (=confer). |
А давайте спросим у носителей? Во фразе don't know (a) shit артикль законен или нет? Носители!!! Ау!!! :)) |
Да я понял, сорри, no hard feelings :-) Я почти носитель (если можно так сказать), в языковой среде уже много лет. |

"Мы знать не знаем и не помним" neither do we know or remember ?? i really think it is "neither do we know or remember" |
Нет артикля! "Dunno shit about..." |
10-4: With all due respect, Murdoch. |
I agree with Gogolesque's posting above. Also, running the risk of being repetitive, I think when translating, we need to preserve the style of the original. To me, the Russian original is neutral, whereas any suggestion involving the word "sh$@t" is offensive in the English language, at least to a lot of people. So, I suggest sticking to the original tone of the comment. On a grammar note, it's "I don't give A $@%&", but "You don't know $@%&". |
Напали, покусали. Ну, и ладно, ну, и фиг с ним. Пусть не будет у вас неопределенного артикля перед shit! Кто никогда не путается с артиклями, пусть первый кинет в себя камнем! Но! To gogolesque: To D-50: To ms801 Вообще, основной вопрос аскера был о том, что это за штука, если слово "знать" переводится как "cannot". Резюме: аминь. |
