Subject: Определенный артикль перед аббревиатурами busin. Нужен ли артикль the перед аббревиатурами государственных структур и учреждений (таких как ФТС, ФСБ - the FCS или FCS). Какими правилами языка это регламентируется?

you need it becasue this service, company... is the one and only of its kind. (thats the rule - you use "the" when there is only one of something ie. the sun the FBI the moon the CIA the FSD the NYPD the LAPD........) to teh sencond question: yes you write the Federal Bureau of Investigation ..... |

Кстати перед FSB артикля я никогда не видел (original sources) есть сокращения где употребялется, а где нет. Вот пример еще с института: перед UN есть арктикль, перед UNO уже нет, а организация одна и та же. |

Ладно я поверю gogolesque :) Спасибо за разъяснения, хотя в нашей документация (я имею в виду официальные документы российских госструктур артикль появляется и исчезает как ему заблагорассудиться) |

| The definite article is used with acronyms (denoting organizations or countries) read as real acronyms, i.e. each letter is pronounced separately (spelled) (the USA, the CIS, the KGB etc.). Zero article is used with acronyms read as words (NATO, OPEC etc.). |

| Calachik - ну это просто зависит от того, как читаешь аббревиатуру - если по буквам, то нужен the (FBI читается Эф-би-ай), а если аббревиатура читается как обычное слово, то артикль не нужен (например, NATO читается не как Эн-эй-ти-оу, а как Нэйтоу, как обычное слово). Прошу прощения за транскрипцию русскими буквами. |

ОК но я почему-то думала, что в официальных текстах аббревиатура всегда пишется как аббревиатура и исходя из правила нужен артикль и вообще не понимаю я смысл прочтения аббревиатуры как слова. Возможно этот вариант (как слово работает только в разговорной речи), а если мы пишем, то всегда ставим артикль the? Я права? |

Ну так тут вся суть как раз в том, что важно то, как аббревиатура произносится, потому что пишется она в любом случае как аббревиатура. В любом случае, я думаю, что аббревиатур, которые читаются не по буквам, а как целое слово, не так много. Просто устоялась уже такая традиция их прочтения, поэтому они воспринимаются просто как имя собственное, название (я так думаю), поэтому и артикля нет. Вот все эти правила в одном месте: 5. Also use "the" when you write out the abbreviation. 6. However, do not use "the" before abbreviations that are pronounced as words. 7. But, do use "the" when these abbreviations are written out. |
