Subject: inch
As though knew, but forgot -
when they put two small strokes after a digit (e.g. 2"), does that mean inch?

Thank you for "yup",

but "huh" is neither answer, nor help.

We-e-el, OK.

Now I see -
"uh-huh" means угу.

(But for "uh", "huh" they give smth quite different.)
...

And now I see gogolesque's second response.

uh-huh sounds like "Аха" по-русски meaning "ага", но не "угу".

 gogolesque

link 7.11.2005 11:01
and "uh" - what we say when we dont know what to say and are thinking out loud or are really stupid

"huh" = what?
"huh" - can also be a mark of surprise with the right intonation

ah.. cave english. i love it!

I checked the expression -

the pronunciation is like ухУ,
translation at least in ramler - угу.

os

im not so sure i like that pronunciation

honestly, writing it in transliteration makes no sense... you just dont have the sound combinations for it in Russian

 Aiduza

link 7.11.2005 11:10
nope, it's "ah-hAh".

 gogolesque

link 7.11.2005 11:14
ага is ah-hah
but uh-huh is still not transliteratable

 OS

Weeeel!
The transcription of uhuh is

омега х Омега

and so it's just bound to sound like ухУ.

 gogolesque

yeah, just like th sounds like t in transliteration (murder, its just plain murder) :)

 gogolesque

link 7.11.2005 11:33
but with transliteration we are also forced to murder your fabulous ы :)

 OS

That's ok.
There's no difference between us in understanding of the loss occurring with th and ы through translit.

 gogolesque

 pupil

link 7.11.2005 12:10

 Aiduza

 pupil

used also in geographical coordinates (angle measurement) (degrees, minutes, seconds)

 Aiduza

again, only in terms of location (geographic coordinates), not time.
