If you 'break an audit trail', it means that you deliberately disrupt/fragment/falsify the 'chain' of written entries in an account or bank statement, and/or destroy receipts/invoices, so that the reader can't see:

* where the money originally came from; and/or

* how the money was spent; and/or

* where the money was transferred to.

This makes it difficult for tax departments, the Police and other regulatory bodies to 'follow' where the money has come from and gone to.
