« I thought not of certificate, nor cared more for mounting Vignemale than Mount Perdu, the ascent of which last mountain nobody believes. What matters it to me? I have made each ascent for my pleasure, not for éclat. What is éclat to me?

"in the ascent of the latter nobody believes" звучало бы более по-английски. Плюс " What matters it to me?" |
the ascent of that last mountain

It's written in an obsolescent form of English which reads very clumsily in modern-day English. (Lister was an early-19th-century writer, of course). Most English-speakers reading this today who didn't know that it dated from the early 19th century would probably assume that it had been written either by a foreigner with a limited knowledge of English, or else by a (poor) machine translator. In modern-day English "Mount Perdu, the ascent of which last mountain nobody believes" would probably be written as either: * "Mount Perdu, which nobody believes I have climbed"; or possibly * "Mount Perdu, which nobody believes can be climbed" [ie, by anybody]. (I'm not sure which of these the author means). Why "this last mountain"? Because she refers to two mountains -- 1) Vignemale and 2) Mount Perdu. She's using 'this last' to mean 'the latter', where...... * 'the former' = Vignemale; and * 'the latter' = Mount Perdu. 'What matters it to me' is also obsolescent English (or else very 'flowery' modern English). Nowadays most people would write this as simply "What does it matter to me?" |
