Subject: "ghosts are turning geist on us" не могу понять, что же они делают. gen.
Добрый день, форумчане. Контекста, увы, считай, нет, но говорящий происходящему явно не рад. Что делают призраки, помогите понять. Гугл, даже иностранный не помог понять разницу именно в этом предложении.
Заранее спасибо.

You've not given much context, but....

* 'geist' here = 'poltergeist'.
* 'to turn (polter)geist on s.o.' = (colloquial) 'to start behaving like poltergeists towards s.o.'.

In other words, the (relatively harmless) ghosts have transformed themselves into (more dangerous, more threatening) poltergeists.

Similar example using 'turn':
'He was a loyal member of the British aristocracy who, after reading Mein Kampf, developed nazi sympathies and turned traitor'.

Призраки взяли нас в оборот.
...занялись нами вплотную/всерьёз.

«Контекста, увы, считай, нет,»

... просто фраза из диалога в игре...

Burning the midnight oil?

Oh, a fire pun. Never heard that one before. I was reading about ghosts. Trying to learn more about the geists we saw. There must be millions of texts and old tomes on the subject. None of them have anything approaching solid facts. Still, there's GOT to be something. Somewhere.

Why are you so interested?

Why do you THINK? Lost ghosts are turning geist on us.

[Scholastic lore: Nazism] "Geist" means "Ghost" in German. Just fyi.

*Sigh* I really shouldn't let this stuff get to me. I've outlived a lot of people. I buried my wife over sixty years ago. Heck, my kids are in their 60s. I'm probably going to outlive them too. And that's... okay, I've made my peace with it. But GEISTS? That their souls could be... twisted like that? I don't like it. Not at all.

johnstephenson, thank you very much, you confirmed my perception of this phrase. i just couldn't find it somewhere written as a whole in context.

00002, именно, фраза в игре :) к сожалению, окружающие фразы не помогают ничем в понимании семантики, если не знаешь либо устойчивого выражения, либо точной разницы между ghost и geist, применимой именно здесь.

Да, но если они вам не помогают, это же еще не значит, что их нет?

И, кстати, следующая же фраза поясняет, почему тут употреблено немецкое geist – отсылка к нацистскости, не к ночи будь помянута.

I've no idea whether it relates to nazis/Germans or not; I was just giving another example of the slang/colloquial use of 'to turn (+noun)' to mean 'to become a (+noun)', which happened to mention nazis.

However, 00002's right: if there's text before and/or after a word/phrase you want help with, you need to show it in your initial question. Leave other forum members to decide whether or not this constitutes relevant context.

johnstephenson but there's no such phrase in the game as
"[Scholastic lore: Nazism] "Geist" means "Ghost" in German. Just fyi."
Must be 00002's personal remark on the "origin" of the word.
Anyway, many thanks for your help, your comment was the most useful here.

Erdferkel так в стиме же доступно. и на GOG.

«Must be 00002's personal remark on the "origin" of the word.»

Может быть и чья-то личная, но не моя.
