Не уверен, но есть такой вариант: Очевидно, ему было известно что-то, чего не знала она, и одна только мысль об этом причиняла ей боль сознанием этого его превосходства |

Victoria Bolliet, фраза из текста литературного произведения может быть переведена "неадекватно", если она читается в отрыве от этого текста. Сравните "Моби Дик" и "Трое в лодке....": месть разъяренного кита и хихиканье расфуфыренных барышень должны заставить вас сто раз подумать, какие слова выбрать для сохранения общего тона повествования. Вам еще найдут комбинацию слов, других; но не факт, что они будут правильно подогнаны... Но в любом случае - не пишите такие сочетания, как "этого его" |

ИМХО: здесь не про "пересилить себя" и не про "превосходство". Clearly he knew something she didn't, and her brain ached just to think about it, overridden as it was. her brain was overridden = she had other (more important (and probably too many)) things to worry about |

Professor Snape was sitting at his desk, glaring at them as they entered as usual. Hermione extracted her books from her bag and set them down on the wooden surface, looking around the room. Malfoy was nowhere to be seen. She felt a load come off her shoulders. Quite by accident, she ended up locking eyes with the Potions Professor. Another tremor threatened to rock through her, but she stiffened her muscles in an attempt to not show weakness in the hateful man's eyes. That unsettling stare held her for a moment, and rather than glaring at her, he seemed to be studying her. A blush worked its way up her face and he rolled his eyes before settling them on her again. Hermione didn't dare blink. That haggard face had an expression of utmost concentration and she stiffened once more, believing him to be attempting to delve into her mind. Feeling no unusual presence in her mind, however, she relaxed ever so slightly. He had not taken his eyes off her, his sunken, pale face remaining as stoic as it had ever been, but there was a change so slight she hardly noticed it until seconds later, when the eye contact had been broken. She was perplexed. Had she just seen pity in his face? It had only been a quick flash of emotion before he'd sneered and turned back to the board, but what did it mean? Clearly he knew something she didn't, and her brain ached just to think about it, overridden as it was. As he gave his lecture, Professor Snape walked between the aisles of desks slowly, looking over each student as if daring them to fall asleep in front of him. Hermione could barely concentrate due to her pounding headache, but she would rather transfer to the Slytherin House than let a silly virus get the better of her. Harry glanced at her neat, perfect notes and looked at his own in dismay before shoving them into his bag as the bell rang. Hermione sighed, tucking her quill into her bag. |

ну, возможно..) Так это, похоже, из Гарри Потера отрывок? Если так, то all bets are off, как говорится :-) х. знает что там имеется в виду: может, ее мозг действительно взят под "ручное управление" какими-то темными силами ) |

'Overridden' is a strange word to use here as it's ambiguous (see mikhailS's seven different possible meanings at 17:09 + other peoples' comments), but I doubt that it means 'manually/automatically bypassed', as in some machinery. I wonder whether the author means that her brain was 'in overdrive'? 'to drive' and 'to ride' have very similar (but not identical) meanings: I assume the author's saying that she already had a bad headache (see the ref to her having a 'pounding headache' in the following para) and that her brain was already overloaded due to thinking about too many things/problems at once. 'in overdrive' or 'overloaded' or 'overworked' would probably have been better terms to use than 'overridden' here, but I suspect only the author knows exactly what he meant. |

'overwhelmed' would definitely have been a better choice here. I mean, the word makes perfect sense in this context. But who are we to judge the author?.. :-) Anyway, back to the point: Thank you for you time John, you've been most helpful ) |

| Wolverin: I can never take fiction too seriously! Shakespeare, Golding, G B Shaw, Pushkin, Gogol', Voltaire and Camus – all compulsory at grammar school – jointly conspired to kill off any interest I might ever have in fiction. So it's been non-fiction only for me ever since! |
