Subject: down to you gen. может ли это выражение употребляться для выражения благодарности?я его воспринимаю как "из-за тебя, по твоей вине". может ли оно означать "благодаря тебе"? (редактирую чужой текст) |

словари говорят, нет, не совсем -- это вообще-то о долге: http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/american/be-down-to-someone |
ладно, пусть duty, decision, responsibility, но в русском - "в этом твоя заслуга". оправдано ли тут it is down to you? |

дык вот получается не совсем - unless там контекст более широкий это доносит есть возможность привести оный? |
в русском было: если мои выводы звучат убедительно, в этом немалая твоя заслуга. перевод: if my conclusions about .... sound convincing, then that is in no small way down to you. |

It's used in some situations where sth good has happened, and you're saying that it was thanks to/due to s.o.'s efforts/contribution, as in: * 'Liverpool's 2-1 win over Arsenal was down to John Smith's last-minute goal'. It's equally used in some situations where sth bad has happened, and you're saying that it was s.o.'s fault: However, you have to be careful about using it as it can sometimes sound a bit informal/colloquial. And you can't use 'Down to you!' by itself to mean just 'Thank you!', at least in the UK. I can't speak for the US. What exactly is the context? Who's saying it and about what? |
John, thank you so much, your opinion is decisive. The phrase is found in the author's acknowledgements in a book. |
выражение использовано неверно в топике. В двух примерах Джона первое - это "за счет", а второе - "из-за". Вы бы еще обратили внимание на "in no small way". "No small" means "big". To say “I hold them in no small way responsible” means I hold them responsible in a big way. http://www.quora.com/Is-the-word-small-needed-in-the-sentence-I-hold-them-in-no-small-way-responsible-for-what-happened-What-correction-can-you-make |
Don’t use it. I'm not going to use it myself. It was used by a native speaker, I was just wondering why. |
