| It probably refers to the three colours in traffic lights -- red, amber and green. 'Traffic light' colouring systems typically use red for 'dangerous', green for 'safe' and amber for (sth inbetween). |

It could have -- I don't know. I suspect some people do say 'red, yellow, green' instead of 'red, amber, green'. They probably don't know what amber is -- apart from a girl's name! http://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/light-signals-controlling-traffic |
