В последней отчаянной попытке демонстративной непокорности / неподчинения испанские поселенцы освободили и вооружили своих рабов, желавших укрыться в глубине острова Ну, отредактируйте, причешите |

crockodile +1 A 'last-ditch' attempt is a final, desperate attempt (to do/achieve sth) when all other options have failed. 'last ditch' probably refers to the last ditch/trench available to soldiers who are retreating in front of a military target they're trying to defend, eg a castle. |

Volinga: It's a set expression, and the picture (of the moat/outer ditch at Helmsley Castle) is for illustrative purposes only. |
A last ditch attempt is a last-minute attempt or an attempt to do something at the final opportunity to do so. This term has its origins in a speech by King William III of England in the late 17th Century. He called upon all Englishmen to "fight and die in the last ditch" to defend England. http://www.grammar-monster.com/sayings_proverbs/last_ditch_attempt.htm |

ОФФ: William III was also called William of Orange. The so-called Orange Order (Protestant extremist brotherhood) in Northern Ireland is named after him. See 'Orange Order'/'Оранжевый орден' in Wikipedia or Google Images for more info if interested. |

johnstephenson, apparently the direct links to the resizr.com are not durable: that web site must be serving the resized images for a limited time - then they probably remove those images (to recycle their storage?) and the links become obsolete. |

Thanks wow2 -- very useful. Yes, resizr seems to be deleting the images after just a few hours, so is pretty useless. It used to keep them for several days. So in future I shall try one of the two sites you've mentioned. I think most people have seen my 'defensive ditches' image now (and I'm fed up of re-posting it!) but I shall remember for the future. Thanks again. |
actually, I'd love to see those images.... |

I'm dead serious |

johnstephenson made a last ditch effort and posted it again... :0) |

Ho! Ho! Yes, but how long will it last...? I think people have got the idea re 'last-ditch' anyway, I won't post it again. |
Nice. Thanks a bunch! |
2 johnstephenson Thanks! It' s really very interesting! |
