The everyday term as used on UK road signs would be something like 'road improvements'. 'Road works'/'major road works' (depending on how much work is involved) is also used. However, '(major) road works' includes holes in the road to repair electricity cables/gas pipes/water mains/drains etc, as well as road improvements.

@johnstephenson Извините, вопрос немного не по теме, а как отличить "ремонт главной автодороги" от капитального ремонта автодороги"? капитальный ремонт автодороги - major road works Одно и то же ведь получается. |

Не уверен что Вы поняли. major road (прилагательное) works то есть можно перевести как крупные/масштабные/ дорожные (road прилагательное!) работы (капитальный ремонт автодороги ) а main road works это чепуха какая-то, извините ) |

@mikhailS Вы не поняли ход моих мыслей. Там просто окончание мн. числа надо было убрать. ремонт главной автодороги - main road work (maintenance) Вот и все. |

No, Maxim's raised a valid point at 19:35 -- both would translate as 'major road works' in English, as we also use 'major roads' to refer to busy/'important' (крупные) roads. So if the speaker wanted to distinguish between the two, he/she'd have to rephrase the second by saying something like 'repairs to major roads'. 'Main road' is slightly less technical than 'major road'. It tends to mean just any wide/busy road (but not a motorway), particularly the wider/busier of two roads at a junction. So in this picture, the road nearer the camera is the 'main road', whilst the road in the distance is a 'side road' or (in town/city centres) a 'side street'. The slightly more technical/legal equivalents of these are 'major road' and 'minor road' respectively.

Should be 'major major road works' (same as Major Major in 'Catch 22') |

The following would all be less ambiguous translations for 'ремонт главной автодороги' than just 'major road works': * '(a/the) (main/major) road (is) under repair' or Which one's best, depends on the exact context -- whether it's on a road sign, spoken, in a report, a newspaper or whatever. |
