Surprisingly, then, by up-regulating miR-29 activity, it is possible to "modulate the balance between the collagen subtypes" in favour of type 1 collagen, thus mitigating or abrogating the reduction in tensile strength of the tendon and modulating its biomechanical properties such as its ultimate failure strength.
