Subject: тут такое слово gen. You've been fagging away at your writing all morning, it's time you took a rest.Вот я сижу дома, и мне нечего делать. Знаю, что обозначает это слово, ну, короче все знают. Но это предложение из учебника (не "оригинального"). Хочу, чтобы Вы подтвердили или опровергли vj` vytybt: будет ли это звучать смешно, если сказать? Конечно, мне нужно мнение носителя языка. Для нас, не носителей, - это как предупреждение: будьте осторожны с фразовыми глаголами. Некоторые имеют сленговые значения!:) |

In UK English, 'to fag away (at sth)' does mean 'to work hard (at sth)' -- BUT a) its use is limited to so-called public schools (which, in the UK, means expensive private schools, which now call themselves 'independent' schools) AND b) it's now old-fashioned. In addition, a 'fag' is US slang for a homosexual. So if your context is UK public schools up to about the 1970s, it may be suitable; otherwise, avoid! Better terms to use in UK English are 'to slave away (at sth)', 'to toil away (at sth)' or, less common, 'to slog away (at sth)'. I can't speak for US English. |

and another addition: a 'fag' is _derogatory_ US slang for a homosexual. definitely avoid. most commonly heard [where i've been] in US: you've been working hard on your (something) ...... |

not even an addition, just a remark: trying to avoid the 'fag', one may run into some other issues, e.g.: 'on this project, you've been working your ass off...' (also widely used) |

but then there is plenty of euphemisms floating around to help with the 23:35 issue ;) butt, buns, tail, etc... |

well, those (euphemisms) still somehow revolve around...you now, 'backside'. we may wanna change the focal point of attention :)) so, just the emasculated 'work/toil hard and long' would be OK. |
