При чём тут "уксус"? И почему его "flinched from lifting"? У меня подозрение, что для связки слов. Потому что дальше глубокие такие вещи идут, ну а это - как компенсация.

Суть в том, что они занимались любовью так долго, что вино превратилось в уксус, и отказывались вставать с постели (flinched from lifting)

Drinking wine which later turns to vinegar is often used to portray how all of the enjoyment and fulfilment can go out of something which, initially, is very thrilling/satisfying but which, when you've been doing it for a long time or had too much of it, goes sour ('turns to vinegar'). In other words, it's no longer exciting/enjoyable. So was it the wine-drinking, the love-making, or a combination of the two that turned sour? Only the author can know for sure, but in this case it's probably both.

By saying that they both 'flinched from lifting' the glasses of wine which had now turned sour, he's probably just saying that they'd had enough/too much love-making (as well as alcohol) and so both decided that they didn't want any more, or were too physically exhausted to continue it, or both.

However, I'm just a pseudo-intellectual rather than a proper intellectual, so I could be wrong."
