Subject: Seems to be troubling gen.
Подскажите, плиз. Следующий диалог:
- My family physician said I needed to talk to a psychiatrist and referred me to you, Doctor. I hope you can help.
- I'll do my best. What seems to be troubling you?
Последнее предложение примерно переводится как: Что Вас беспокоит? Но что означает выражение seems to be troubling? Как дословно перевести?
Заранее спасибо!

prezident83: It doesn't mean anything: it's just a standard construction used by doctors when speaking to patients. It sounds slightly more polite and friendly than the (shorter, blunter) standard version. For example,

"What seems to be the matter?" = "What's the matter?"
"What seems to be the problem?" = "What's the problem?"

So the 'seems' doesn't actually mean anything. It's just a method used by doctors to make patients feel comfortable and to invite them to talk about their problem(s) -- part of a doctor's so-called 'bedside manner'.

Correction: It doesn't mean anything when used by a doctor in this particular way; it does mean something when used in other contexts, of course.

johnstephenson,
I am not sure you are right 100%. The difference between "What seems to be the problem?" and "What's the problem?" is that while the latter acknowledges existance of the problem, the former suggests that the problem might be imaginary. And when the doctor says ""What seems to be the problem?" he tries to calm the patient down by downgrading the problem itself, like it is not such a big deal as it might seem to the patient.

I mean "downplay"

There is a (small) element of that in it, yes -- as though the doctor's saying "You tell me what the symptoms are, and I'll decide whether it's a medical problem or not".
