Subject: a/the gen. Доброго времени суток. Я не переводчик, а всего лишь учу самостоятельно язык. Вот возник вопрос об артиклях. Living in the countryside of England is better than in the city. Мне кажется, что вместо "in the city" нужно "in a city".

'In a city' is probably better here, as you say. However, people also say 'I prefer living in the city', or even 'I prefer living in cities', both of which mean cities generally. There's not much difference between them. The rules are slightly different for 'suburb', 'town' and 'village'. Don't ask me why! If you're in any doubt as to which to use, and you're not talking about a specific city/town/village, use 'a': |

i know it's quite useless to enter an argument about the use of articles if your opponent is an educated native speaker, but to me 'the city' is correct here. one generalized reference to something, 'the countryside', is compared to/followed by another, 'the city'. call me stark raving mad but i just see it this way. |

Wolverin: Educated? Durrrr.... You're right about 'the city' -- it's usually used to mean 'the city (as opposed to the countryside)'. |

непонятно, с кем пытается спорить топикстартер - с автором учебника? по мне так в данном контексте the city - то, что доктор прописал, обычное противопоставление the country (the countryside), городская среда обитания. оговорюсь, что речь идет о BrE - возможно, в других странах мнение иное. ну, вот, например: |

| wow, Wolverin & Aidusa: Actually, you're probably right: the author's comparing city-living to life in the countryside, so 'the city' is more appropriate in this case. |

trin, все дело в том, что здесь the countryside, the city используются в собирательном смысле. Это так же как в инструкциях пользователя называют "the user", при этом имеется в виду пользователь вообще, а не один из пользователей. |
| И так же, как, например, the Ivanovs - Ивановы (имеется в виду вся семья Ивановых). А почему здесь артикль the - это, как сказал Aiduza, "то, что доктор прописал", т.е. так надо )) |

Here's a good example of 'the city' being used to mean 'cities generally'/'a city (unspecified)'.
