yes, the first thing that came to my mind also was the nose...and, dear gogolesque, if the resemlence in "being maniacal", then please avoid us from hearing this scary story please :-)

though i must admit that never knew about last two caracteristics of Gogol, that Mr. V mentioned

its not that i am COMPLETELY maniancal (not that i would really call him "maniacal")

Brains: thats what you like the most? (would be stranger if you said Taras Bulba was your favorite!) what about dead souls, the portrait (thats scary) and the story about wives coming out of your ears (cant remember the name of it now)? in my opinion, everything he did was superb! (except for Taras Bulba) and his letters are incredibly revealing. (if you cant guess - i studied him too well :))

My guess: Gogol was never married, maybe that's the case with gogolesque? :-))
to shan'ka: Гоголь сжел второй том "Мертвых душ", в котором решил оправдать Чичикова и всех остальных негодяев. Том сгорел не полностью, так что его части можно почитать. За этот второй том Гоголя очень ругал Белинский.

Насчет being maniacal: по-моему, есть легенда о том, что Гоголь в буквальном смысле слова переворачивался в могиле и вообще боялся уснуть летаргическим сном, потому что его могли похоронить заживо. Некоторые считают, что так оно и случилось.

Slava - ok, i admit - he WAS maniacal (i just think maniacs are intiguing, so i dont like the term)
and have you read the remains of the second tome? they are truly interesting.
never married??? nope! got a husband and a kid in the oven! :)

Renaissance - i certainly do not live there - but thought about looking for an apartment there once! nice area! and great name!

Well, gogolesque, I'm kinda horror fan, though I did like Bulba as well. Still I consider those early macabresques the most inspiring and inspired, sadly too rare a case for Russian literary tradition and underestimated by official critics.
Do you really find anything uncanny in the Portrait? I hardly forced myself to crawl it through (though such a small piece of writing!). Tastes differ…

i love all his work. his early works were inspired and inspiring (but his earliest only re-worked ukranian folk tales)
his progression as a writer was also very distinct. the progression in his writing actually marked his progression as a person....
as for the portrait, i think i love it so much because the first time i read it, i was 13 and those kinds of things tend to make impressions on 13 year olds :)

Re-worked? In no way up to that extent. I'm not a folklorist, but — having been born in Ukraine and very fond of every bit of horror lore — dare to say those early Dikan'ka tales are only very loosely based on it and origined from Gogol's own imagination.
Especially Vij is unique in its rather exceptionally developed (as for Russian mainstream literature) gruesome living dead / gnomic content. I hardly uncovered its roots in Afanasyev's academiс fairy tale compendium. To consider those picturesque Gogol's dreadfuls as the ramakes of ukrainian (or rather Russian) folk tales has nothing more in common with reality than to believe that Dreyer's 1931 Vampyr really was a movie remake of Le Fanu's Carmilla. Imho, of course.

i got wind of a dispute that the early works are more based on them than many think, but since it is a debate - i wont go into details here

and i agree with you in any case - they are his own, but the debate claims that most of what he supposedly dreamed-up was oral tradition and the such - but i really dont think that is the case.

Смотреть-то смотрели, да когда это было! Вот теперь ищу, где б его взять в приемлемом виде. Amazon его совсем по сумасшедшей цене предлагает, просто даже из принципа не хочется покупать. Напряжёнка в этой стране с кинами.

Вы где живете? В Москве его можно достать на горбушке, но я видел только на кассетах. Если ее всю насквозь пройти, можно, наверно, и на двд найти. Есть хороший магазин двд на Китай-городе, не помню только название. Выходить надо к памятнику героям Плевны и идти вверх по некой улице - тоже не помню название :-(( совсем рядом.
