There's no bad English here. As a quick internet search reveals, the quote comes from a 1775 document (note the use of capitals with every noun) and William Duane was a journalist. I think you'll agree it's highly unlikely that a perpetrator of bad English could get a job as a journalist back in the 18th century. To rub off means to influence someone or to impart one's qualities/characteristics on someone/something. E.g. a happy person's mood can rub off on others = they will feel happier. Or a bully's bad attitude may rub off on his/her peers and they will become bullies, too. | до сих пор есть пуристы, считающие off of ошибкой. их даже можно встретить, особенно благодаря интернетам. без интернетов сложнее, надо места знать. зато off of повсеместно. особенно в этих ваших объединенных штатах. |

Legolas+, taken out of context, off of is indeed bad English. However 'rubber of dust' makes no sense. And when things make no sense it pays to do a bit of research. Always a better strategy than jumping into conclusions ;-) PS the States are no more 'ours' than they are 'yours'. As above, don't make assumptions :-) |
