каждый день улыбаться собственному отражению в зеркале.
Суть упражнения в том, что наш организм выстраивает не только прямую связь, реагируя улыбкой на приятные события, но и обратную.

My problem is how to translate the last sentence so that it makes sense in English. I don't think it really explains it well in Russian, actually. Прямую и обратную связь с чем? We also don't say "organism" like you do in Russian. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

You generate a smile signal to the mirror (прямая связь) and get a smile feedback (обратная связь) from the mirror. So you smile and get a smile in response.

Beth, you are right. Russian version sounds really meaningless.
If pleasant events make us smile should we really exercise to make those events to smile back? You can smile as much as you like watching a playful puppy, and you can exercise in front of the mirror as much as you want, that puppy is not going to smile back.
