Court orders approving the adoption of a child totalled 5,206 in 2012, up by nearly 500 in just 12 months, official figures published yesterday showed. It is the biggest annual increase in adoptions for 15 years. The number of children under the age of one adopted rose by 50 per cent, from 76 to 113. The figures will be a boost for Education Secretary Michael Gove, who has pledged to ‘radically’ speed up the time taken to place children with a new family.
