Bile acid molecular structure may influence their urinary excretion, as occurs for biological properties such as albumin binding, retention time on HPLC and haemolytic activity of individual bile acids. The octanol:water partition is a parameter of the lipophilicity of bile acid molecules. The results in Table 6 differ from those found by HPLC, but they are more closely correlated with some biological properties.Correlating the water-partitioned fraction of individual bile acids (directly related to their hydrophilicity) with the amount of bile acids excreted in the urine, two lines may be plotted; these represent the di- and trihydroxylated bile acids. The dihydroxylated bile acids show a strong positive correlation (r = 0.97) between hydrophilicity of DCA, CDCA and UDCA and the amount of BA excreted with the urine. HDCA is ***outlaying because its administration induces strong urinary excretion of BA. The reason why the 6c( hydroxy group of HDCA is a good substrate for conjugation, and why HDCA has a low capacity to enrich the bile acid pool, remains unresolved. The amounts of BA excreted during the administration of trihydroxylates lie further to the right because of their great hydrophilicity; the correlation coefficient between urinary BA and hydrophilicity is very high (r = 0.86).
