Hippo are not easy to approach on land, because they seem to have good eyesight and a keen sense of hearing. They also seem to possess a relatively good sense of smell, so it is considered essential to stalk them from downwind. Successful hunting methods are to ambush a known "basking bank" and to stalk an identified bull within a pod.

The ethical sport hunting of Hippopotamus amphibius is clouded by controversy. In African countries where these animals are hunted for sport, it is usually illegal and generally considered unethical to hunt at night or with the use of a spotlight. It is also considered unethical to shoot at or within a reasonable distance of any permanent water source. Shooting from a boat, like shooting from a hunting vehicle, is deemed unethical. So how does one hunt a hippo in the strictest sense of what we professional hunters call fair chase? Although there is no real answer to this question, in the vast majority of cases, hippo will usually be found in or next to water during legal shooting hours. With regard to the ethical hunting of these pachyderms, the hunter's own conscience must surely be the deciding factor in what he deems to be fair chase.

I believe that if a hippo is to be hunted for sport in or near water, it must be hunted well. By this I mean stalked to within the closest possible shooting distance and shot so it will be killed quickly, cleanly, and efficiently. The hunt should be planned so the hippo will not run into the water and die there.

The sportsman hunts hippo for their tusks, which make interesting conversation pieces; their hide, which can be tanned into surprisingly good-quality leather; their meat, which makes for good eating and is similar to beef; and as a source of bait for lion hunting. Lion love hippo meat, and a big bull will certainly provide plenty of it. Hippo are also shot on crop-protection exercises to keep their numbers in balance.

Controversial as it may seem, ethical sport hunting, conservation, and the sustainable utilization of our wildlife resources all go hand in hand-fueled by nothing but the foreign currency that it generates. "If it pays, it stays" is the keynote statement for the survival of African wildlife, and the funds generated from sport hunting are very much in the forefront of all such earnings.

хотя пожалуй логика есть - в выборе объекта: хорошо выражать свое мнение и давать советы неким potential hunter-ам, которых тут нет, - они ж хотя бы не пошлют куда подальше ;))
