4. Control of veterinary products
Legislative reform efforts should ensure that VMPs will be subject to adequate quality control consistent with international standards; that there is suitable provision for pharmacovigilance; and that a programme for monitoring and preventing unsafe drug residues in foods of animal origin is established to protect the public health and meet international trade requirements.
The Veterinary Committee has outlined an appropriate strategy to strengthen the control of VMPs and this could serve as a basis for the development of more appropriate legislation and programmes.
