Subject: Perfect or Future-in-the-Past gram. Good day, dear colleagues!Везде Future-in-the-Past или я давно не делала контрольные? Economists understood that inflation (to cause) many economic problems by the end of the previous year. |

я бы в третьем написал просто depended... но контрольных тоже давно не делал)) |
переумничала однако)) Данке шён |
correct |
1. Macroeconomists predicted that inflation (to get better). 2. The early economists believed that the price of commodity (to depend) on the labour which was needed to produce it. 3. The OPEC group showed how quickly the balance of economic power (to change) by the end of the last decade. В первом и втором случаях глаголы в главных предложениях опять подталкивают меня к would. 3. Past Perfect |
No, 'were depending' is more like it because = during that period. So, you were right, Nite :)) (NPI) Of course one can speculate that 'at that time' means exactly 'on that day'. |
/шопотом/ damned grammar... who uses it? Thanks, Wolverin. |

2 Nite С возвращением! )) У вас там что ли аттестация переводчиков? |
Привет миста! Я погрязла в работе, перевела целого кальмар-ричстакера. А это халтурка, которая как лакмусова бумажка показала, что тупеем мы на технических переводах без должного практикования заумных грамматических оборотов. С поднебесной выбрался? |

1. price is singular, so "was depending" 2. depend is not usually used in continuous |
LK, Have you been drinking? 1) "price is singular, so "was depending" " This is what I referred to: "The people in the industrial countries knew that at that time they were depending heavily on imported oil. - WHAT PRICE? -. 2) "depend is not usually used in continuous" |

Wolverin, make love, not war))) no google-fight. For me "were depending" sounds a little bit odd. I'm not sure, but doesn't grammar books say something about verbs not commonly used in cont.? I just thought "depend" was one of them. |
|

shoot, my own grammar is terrible ))) |
What war? It's cool. Don't worry. You just need to get your bearings, man. "shoot, my own grammar is terrible" However, the question still remains: show me those "grammar books [that] say something about verbs not commonly used in cont.? -I just thought "depend" was one of them-" As an essay writer [the name I dare call myself], you can not be too careful. So, I am curious- maybe all those years I have been terribly wrong using 'depending'. |

Sorry, don't have anything at hand, will look it up later... So far only some dubious E-sources like: http://www.myenglishgrammar.com/present-continuous-tense.html Not exactly to the point, but still: an essay writer may easily use something that will not be approved by a Russian teacher of English )) |
о русских учителях английского давайте не надо, и так уже много сказано. Check please the second portion of sentences. I will much appreciate this. |
2. The early economists believed that the price of commodity (to depend) on the labour which was needed to produce it. DEPENDED I think |

I vote for "depended". "I believe the price depends on the labour..." + the usual "sequence of tenses" rule |
Wolverin&Lonely Knight Enterprise 4, Coursebook,Grammar Reference page 158. Virginia Evans-Jenny Dooley According to the ladies DEPEND doesn't have continuous form. |

a guess: may be it has smth to do with meanings of "depend"? Like, "I was depending (=counting) on you" sounds more or less ok? |
verbs expressing a permanent state rather than an action. These are; verbs of senses verbs of feelings\amotion verbs of opinion (agree, suppose, understand...) other verbs; belong, consist, depend, include, require.....) However, Americans love writing "I'm needing your info ....." |
"Virginia Evans-Jenny Dooley" - (~
Thanks everybody for good kick on/in/at (ненужное вычеркнуть) my ass. |
Да ладно, чего уж там, теперича ничего не попишешь с такой душой-то-) ( Разве что почитаешь-) |
