The mother of all Russian cities |
спасибо |
+ I just would insert the modifier "old": Kyiv (or Kiev) is the mother of all old Russian cities. |

I wouldn't. In the above-referenced link, the English is evidently the work of a non-native speaker, culled from the kievcitytours site. |
Ростов - папа, Одесса - мама. А при чем здесь Киев? |
зачем в _цитату_ вообще что-то вставлять? |
HarryWharton&Co, Hi man, You are right, the link is weak, at least language-wise:)) I trusted in the "co.uk" thing, my bad. However, opinion is divided on the subject. It's a small point but I would still use the "old". Just so it would sound "more pertaining" to Kievan Russia. |

Wolverin, I get your point. Without wishing to sound too finicky, to me at least, saying "the mother of all OLD Russian cities" implies Kiev isn't the mummykins of those which aren't old. If that's what the Russian phrase means (i.e. excluding the non-old [whatever they are]), then, I agree with you, "old" has a place here. |
HarryWharton&Co, это цитата, ей тыща с лишним лет |

Yes, I know. In my little missive to Wolverin I was simply taking the opportunity to muse philiosophically over the semantic implications of adding "old" to the phrase. The English version I suggested above is the 'set' translation. |
"И сел Олег, княжа, в Киеве, и сказал Олег: - Да будет это мать городам русским" (с) прп. Нестор Летописец Комментарий: |
одним словом, Егупец |
"saying "the mother of all OLD Russian cities" implies Kiev isn't the mummykins of those which aren't old" yes, that's what I meant. Suppose you are a tour guide in Kiev explaining "some stuff" about |
<<<<<<<<<одним словом, Егупец это от перспективы (ракурса) зависит |
yes, Wolverin's idea is worth paying attention a rough equivalent "mother of all Russian cities" may mislead an English-speaking target audience may a ttranslator be sure that an average western man is aware of the history of Russian-Ukrainian relations hardly ever Perhaps a tranlator's note will do? |
