НО есть много устоявшихся вариантов, читаемых как слово
NATO, OPEC

они обычно на слуху и их не составит труда запомнить

есть и такие "смешанные" варианты как, например, PSAR (preliminary safety analysis report) - все поголовно нейтивы говорят Пи-САР

The rule of thumb for English acronyms is to pronounce them like a word if possible. (Hence, NATO, OPEC, GAAP). If that's impossible, we just pronounce the letters individually (KGB, FSB, BBC, USA, UK)

I'm not sure this will be of general interest or, even more, that it has much to do with translation, but, since you ask...

HarryWharton&Co isn't just one person - so far there's 6 of us ("the Co" for short). We're all translators, some living in Europe, two in Moscow and Odessa, and one in South America, one in North America. We're of various creeds, colours, and relgions, etc. Two are UN, another IMF. There's 3 Russian speakers: me (English native) and my wife, Elmira.(Russian/Tatar) and Frank. Together, we have English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Tatar (not much call for that), and, er, Welsh (even less call for that), Polish, Turkish, Latin and Ancient Greek, and various Indian dialects. Basically, we're just a group of translator friends helping each other to get work, giving advice, helping each other generally, etc. We just thought it would be fun to form a 'company', unofficial, of course. We meet up once a year. On Multitran, it's only me (Harry) and Elmira. So sometimes it's Elmira adding her bit, sometimes me, under the name HarryWharton&Co. Voila!

As for "when it's the Co's turn to strike", that means that, yes, we enjoy and even welcome sarcastic comments and good humour, but we hope others who are sarcy about our humble efforts don't mind us being sarcastic in return, when the time comes. Fair is fair. We certainly don't take offence and hope nobody does either if we occasionally riposte.

HarryWharton&Co will grow, of course.
