hi kath, I was just kidding.....warming up before I start writing my diary.

Nice to have you here. I thought you already split...off to...you know, "back to Dovlatov". I must say - a good choice you had made! Good author, I mean it.
The man has his style, which itself is not easy. Granted, his writings present a certain problems for you guys, but do not despair and boldly go where....ah, you know the rest:)) It's like - no pain no gain. To alleviate your pain (pardon the pun) - I am "doing" Henry James now:))

Sorry, drop the "a certain", insert "some".

"start writing your diary" - as in a memoir? you're a writer or kidding again?

i'm here regularly until i'm done with dovlatov (although i've been on here on and off since 2004). i'm not translating, i'm editing an existing translation before it goes to print later this month. it can be difficult, especially when it come to jargon of the times, but it's also a lot of fun and i have to say, some people on this forum have been invaluable. so thanks to all!

henry james isn't too shabby :)), but could be emotionally exhausting. good luck!

ps - "boldly go..." - dovlatov liked the theme from star trek :) (by maynard ferguson)

to kath,

I am not old enough to write my мемуары:)) But I do keep a diary. It's important to me. I even write it on paper, not electronically. Helps one not to lose the skill of handwiting.
Henry James is one tough nut to crack. To analyze him may physically hurt anyone, esp. a Russian. Nevertheless, I just love his phrasing and style. All those long and even longer run-on sentences.

A diary is a good thing to read after a few years, although mine is on my computer. I find writing by hand painfully slow.
Am generally not a huge fan of victorian literature, nor descriptive digressions, but as long as you're enjoying yourself... :)) (I'm a big fan of simplicity)
