Subject: is или are? Дорогие коллеги! На ночь глядя мозги совсем отказывают... Не могу сообразить, в этом предложении должно быть is или are? 'More than 26,000 km3 of fresh water ........ concentrated in lakes'. Спасибо

5 ltrs of juice IS in the box. Мы бы поставили множественное число, если бы использовали juice как исчисляемое существительное,тогда бы оно имело значение <порция сока> (стакан, пакет и проч.) |

А если бы было 5 litres of juice? IS too When the subject is "a period of time, an AMOUNT, a distance, a speed" the verb is singular: Five litres of juice is .... |

Дело не в исчисляемости/неисчисляемости, а в том, как мыслится данный предмет речи - как множество раздельных объектов или как нечто единое и неделимое. Источник, к сожалению, точно привести не могу, но можно порыться в нативных грамматических справочниках. E.g. "ANOTHER $100,000 WAS sent for sanitation and health activities", "15 minutes IS left till the end of the class". Ответ по сабжу: IS, однозначно:-) |
