А вот здесь, например, Maternity benefit, и если честно, я этому источнику больше доверяю

Generally, Maternity Allowance, Maternity Benefits and Maternity Pay are different things and their meaning varies from country to country.

For example, in the UK:
Statutory Maternity Pay is paid to pregnant women by their employer in the same way that wages are paid. It is paid for up to 26 weeks (the Maternity Pay Period) and is subject to payment of National Insurance Contributions.

If for some reason a customer is unable to get Statutory Maternity Pay, (for example, if they are self-employed or they have recently changed jobs), they may qualify for Maternity Allowance

Maternity Allowance (MA) is a tax-free benefit payable to pregnant women who cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay from their employer, to the self-employed and women who have recently given up their jobs.
Maternity Allowance is paid for up to 26 weeks.

In Quebec, the maternity allowance is paid to pregnant women to compensate the 14 day waiting period before you receive employment insurance. In the rest of Canada, maternity allowance is the employer’s payment in addition to the maternity benefit paid by the government.
