I didn't mean it was outdated. I said that you don't get a bargain or anything when you buy them in cartons, so why bother? You normally buy 20 or, until recently, 10 Blue John Players or whatever. The words 'cartons' would be used by wholesalers, or or by those who somehow deal with cigarettes in their jobs. So now on second thought I dare say that the correct translation would be as follows: I bought myself 200 Kents to try them out |

| Я бы не спорил. Carton имеет чисто британский оттенок. Наверное, более распространенным словом является pack. Даже в песнях поется pack. |

Дело в разнице восприятия словосочетания "пачка сигарет" русскими и британцами (об американцах и пр. утверждать не берусь). Если для русских это "ПАЧКА сигарет", то для британцев это "a pack OF CIGARETTES" cyrill Пару лет назад еще были пачки по 10 сигарет, поэтому покупатель уточняет, сколько именно он хочет. Отсюда и 200 для обозначения блока. |

In the US в магазине или на заправке: can I have a pack of... or can I have a carton of (если блок) Если на заправке акция 2 за цену одной (в магазинах почти никогда не бывает): give me that twofor of... есть пачки по 10, тогда give me that 10-cigarette pack of... "20 red Marlboros" would most likely mean 20 packs or 20 cartons if in a wholesale store like a Costco. |
