So, is it appropriate to immediately begin work with agents that require high-containment once the aforementioned tasks are complete? Absolutely not. Method: Prior to handling fully virulent microbes in the regional biocontainment laboratory (RBL) at Duke University, attenuated microbes were used to develop competency, skill, and confidence in workers while working at BSL-3 containment. Such agents (e.g., Bacillus anthracis [Sterne strain], Yersinia pestis [KIMS strain], vaccinia virus [MVA strain]) were also used to test BSL-3 containment SOPs for feasibility and effectiveness.
