mischief, mischievous |
to spite, to be spitefut |
to be capricious |
be nasty/naughty, скорее даже nasty. mischief, mischievous - все-таки здесь больше "шалости" (не подходит к контексту) to spite, to be spiteful - больше "злобы" (не подходит к контексту) Все зависит от контекста. |

well, the closest thing i can come up with is not exactly socially acceptable, but what the heck. it is bitchy, as in the english are bitchy, or the english r known for their bitchiness, or more inspiredly, bitchiness is an english virtue (legal disclaimer: the act of translation of the russian original does not constitute an endorsement of, or agreement with, its message) |

Trying to be difficult |
Еще хорошее слово, уже цитировавшееся на форуме - crabby. Это и есть "вредный". Только слышал я его от американцев :-) |

Crabby means easily irritated or annoyed, given to complaining a lot. |
That's what we mean when we say "вредный" :-) |

From gramota.ru: ВРЕДНЫЙ прил. 1. Причиняющий, наносящий вред, способный причинить вред (противоп.: полезный). // Опасный для принятых норм жизни, нравственности и т.п., способствующий разрушению каких-л. основ, устоев (политических, моральных и т.п.). 2. разг. Недоброжелательный, злой. 3. разг. Свойственный такому человеку. To me, it sounds like "вредный" implies some kind of malicious intent (or ill will, or spite) - a desire to cause pain, injury, or distress to another. "Crabby" does not reflect any of that.(imho) This might be helpfull to see the dark part of the spectrum of human emotions :-) |
Кстати, spiteful я предлагала, исходя из определения русского слова (только не с gramota.ru). С другой стороны, зачастую мы используем "вредный", "вредина" не в этом значении, а скорее "упрямый", "непослушный". И тут подходят почти все предложенные варианты в зависимости от того, что мы хотим выразить. |

actually, truth seeker, crabby does imply malice on the part of the person whom the word describes. to me, it conjures up an individual with a perversly ill-tempered, quarrelsome disposition, somebody who dishes out wrath at every opporunity, justifiably or otherwise. of course, it does not suggest going out of one's way to wreak emotional havoc, but then again, neither does the russian word вредный. as a matter of fact, crabby is too strong a word, if anything. but as annaa has sagaciously pointed out, the russian word can take on a whole host of different shades of meaning depending on the context, ergo one would be hard pressed to come up with a one-size-fits-all translation. having said that, i do believe that slavster's suggestion, crabby, fits the bill. |
Мне кажется в этой фразе: "англичане часто вредничают", совершенно не имеется в виду их какие либо злобные наклонности, недоброжелательнность и т.д. Для меня это звучат так, что англичане, как маленькие избалованные дети: того хочу, этого не хочу, а это из приципа не буду. В них скорее говорит природный снобизм и упрямство, и ни в коем случае что-то другое, что можно было бы воспринять серьезно. И в этом случае лучше подойтет capricious or fastiduos |
"Trust me, I know what I do" (c) :-) корнет-а-пистон: now I know who you are :-) To Catrina: "вредничают" - разговорное слово. Fastiduous - до такой степени не разговорное, что, имхо, его процентов 50 нейтивов просто не знают. |

catrina, that is a VERY valid point. in that case, i guess the best way to convey the same mix of attributes in english would be "fussy." as in, the english r given to bouts of fussiness. another, but decidely american, option would be to use finicky. but fussy is the better alternative. slavster: :-) apparently, this handle change ruse is not fooling anybody. i guess i should go back to my old nick, eh? |
I'm not visiting this forum often, so nick changes are not that apparent to me. It was when you called me "slavster" that I suddenly had a revelation :-) I like your previous one better because it is shorter :-) |

hum, slavster, there is NOTHING short about me :-)))) |

8)) tal, quit foolin' around, you cannot play piston anyway 8))) |
To tal: I knew I got something wrong, sorry :-) |
Consider "unpleasant" here. He is acting unpleasantly, Вопреки тому, что может показаться любителям частотного гугелирования и простого прочтения толковых словарей, в живом реальном языке слово unpleasant употребляется в этом контексте именно в значении вредничать. Говновозиться преднамеренно, если хотите :-) |
