Subject: OPERATIONAL LOGISTICS OF SOLID PRODUCTS THROUGH RIO ORINOCO O&G, oilfield.
17.3. OPERATIONAL LOGISTICS OF SOLID PRODUCTS THROUGH RIO ORINOCO
Navigation on the Río Orinoco is secure along the trajectory from area of Punta Cuchillo to the estuary at the Atlantic, with low risk of stranding, however it can be improved with lighting systems, positioning and navigation control along the channel.
The principal variable that limits both the draught as well as the number of ships, is the channel of Caño Boca Grande, a sector of approximately 40 miles, located between the estuary of the river and the Atlantic Ocean, which allows for navigation in one direction and must be widened and dredged due to high sedimentation in that area. This limitation can be mitigated by corresponding actions, which will be considered in the following phases of the project.
A study indicates that the capacity of the channel is limited to 1200 ships per year without causing congestion. To increase the capacity, the ships would have to be organized at the entrance and exit of the channel in convoys of up to 4 to 5 ships that would navigate consecutively in each direction. This practice would permit to increase the capacity of navigation to approximately 2,400 ships per year, but would generate waiting periods of 4 to 5 hours in each direction. Historically, the Orinoco Channel has maintained traffic of around 1,000 ships per year.
