The export numbers indicate that industrial production in Japan is likely to slow sharply in coming months,” said Flemming Nielsen, senior analyst at Danske Bank.

“We now believe that the Japanese economy is likely to contract by close to 1 per cent, quarter on quarter, in the last three months of 2008.”

Mr Nielsen also noted that the data were consistent with recently released export figures in China, South Korea and Taiwan.
