Did your mother promise to take you to the theatre или Has your mother promised to take you to the theatre?

Did your mother promise to take you to the theatre? i would ask this exact phrase if someone was complaining that mom did not take him/her to the theater. I would ask "Did she PROMISE?" Has your mother promised to take you to the theatre (or did she just say that she might)? but # 1 has more connotations for me. |
Так что take it easy! :) |
Когда дают советы те, кому еще поучиться нужно. in that case, there is not one single person in this world who should ever give anyone else advise. not taking sides, just pointing out a small fact. |

И даже: "But you promised...!" :-) |
|

#2 Has you mother.....? It's more like you are a kid and you say to your Grandmother that mom is going to take you to the theater and Grandma says "oh, has your mother promised (said she would ) to take you to the theater? how lovely!" :)) |
Nina dear, you are wasting your time |
SirReal I don't care. I have plenty of time to waste today as I wait for materials at work. And what does it matter to you, anyhow? |
y'all make me crazy |

Deserad It't the other way round... experience should have made him realize that kicking the underdog is not the way to go... but not all of us gain experience and wisdom.. some gain experience, greed and cynicism. I myself, am hoping to come out as one of type # 1 here. :) |
and by the way, I have 27 years experience as a native speaker. does that give me the right to treat students of my language like trash? no, of course not. so never tell yourself that experience gives you the right to be rude. you wouldn't call a foreigner trying to learn Russian an imbecile if he couldn't get the hang of all that grammar mumbo-jumbo right off the bat, would you? |
Nina79, my greatest respect!!!!! |
Deserad for what? |
Or is it better to say - my highest respect? For your true words! |
glad to make you feel so good, but no need for the head-bowing... you could always just say something like: and then I won't feel like you are paying homage to me...... :) (I don't need that any more than you need to pay it) |
tanuwka this can happen around here. less than it used to, really. you either get used to it or you leave in the end. if you like the resource as a tool, you will get used to it. if you find it too frustrating to work around all the mess that can be created here, you will live like some have in the past (though many, like myself) return). just ignore it. it's all you can do |
Nina, "experience should have made him realize that kicking the underdog is not the way to go" This has nothing to do with underdogs. Someone gave dumb advice and I pointed it out. Being wrong is NOT a problem - leading other people to be wrong IS. You love to treat all people the same? Fine, it's your right and your choice. I don't. I differentiate. I pay attention to what people do and how they act, and I know Deserad has no place being here commenting on English grammar. Anyone who's been here a while will tell you that. Hey, do I really have to tell you this? You've been here longer than I, you know all the regulars. If you choose to look down someone just for being critical - without considering what caused the criticism - you're just too PC. I feel like saying the opposite of "chill out." |
should read "look down on someone" |
you missed the point a bit here, too. it has a lot to do with underdogs and kicking them. you can tell someone he is wrong without being rude. and the rest of us will be more willing to listen to you in the end. and it is not a matter of not differentiating between people. it is a matter of treating people with respect. whether someone is a fool or a wiseman is no matter, they should all be treated with respect. personal opinion, and frankly, i think it's what would make the world work a little better than it does today. PC has nothing to do with it... because as well all know (here), I am not highly PC. |
and i don't look down on you because you are critical. i just think you act the fool when you are not constructive with your criticism. there is positive criticism and there is negative criticism. |
I guess you and I are here for different reasons. |
you are here to make people feel bad about themselves and tell them that they know nothing? you are here to put people in a bad mood? and i am here to help them while not making them feel like morons? and to help them maintain a healthy mental attitude while they slog through English Forest? |
Btw, you also missed my point. "whether someone is a fool or a wiseman is no matter" Again, it's NOT about being knowledgeable. I said, being wrong is just fine. Making other people wrong is not fine. Clouding some student's understanding of English tenses is not fine. And it's not like this was the first time... |
Making other people wrong is not fine. - i agree. but i still say you can correct the problem positivly |
And the only way to correct THIS problem is by asking the user to stay away from giving advice on English! What's so hard to understand? |
Having fun yet? |
It's as good a way to spend time as any. |
I would not like to interfer and to repeat the old things I always said - but I still think that all people may take part in discussions if they decided to do so - since this is just a discussion, and there may be different answers and different opinions. You will never find absolutely correct answers, the most important thing is that you are trying to help somebody. Who gave the right to ordinary translators to judge their colleagues? I can't understand it. If someone is obviously wrong this can be solved in a friendly manner. If this becomes impossible the forum administration should write down the rules and regulations regarding who has a right to become a forum member and how to behave here. But in this case all people would have to follow them...The second way is to ignore (like Nina said) and just to follow the discussion... |
exactly. and now we arent bored at work, are we? Sir Real Look the point is - you were a bit brash with your Совсем забыли подумать, да? that's all. then it developed into this weird "philosophy of life as told by Nina79" thing. over and done and both of us made our points about 400 times. zabluzhdenie naroda eto ploho (that's why i am not of a certain faith) but unizhenie naroda eto tozhe ne good. agreed? |
