Subject: побывали в исправительной колонии Н1 строгого режима (фгу ИК-1)
this sentence comes from an article about prison in which a school has been created
"каково это - учиться в тюрьме попытались выяснить корреспонденты, которые накануне дня знаний побывали в исправительной колонии Н1 строгого режима (фгу ИК-1)"

what does фгу stands for please? and could you explain to me whats the "день знаний"? thanks a lot for your help

... before September 1, the beginning of the new academic year, .... (for день знаний)
фгу -- federal state institution. i think you can go without it

"ahead of September 1..." is better here than "before"

can you tell me in russian which words correspond to фгу ?
and день знаний, is it sthg particular, sthg like the 1st of september? i mean, why does the journalist uses this term?

фгу -- федеральное государственное учреждение
день знаний IS the first of September, the day when a new academic year begins in post-Soviet states. the day is known there as день знаний.
the journalist perhaps thinks that the use of the term makes the story hmm... a bit more lively.
