| вроде все правильно, но как-то не по-английски звучит. А с точки зрения грамматики - все хорошо. |

I would not use past perfect here, unless the whole story is in the past and it is important to emphasize that he is not carrying those things any more (as in he has died). Simple past is probably what I would use here. Or, if it is important to show continuous action of "carrying" then try "he has been carrying...." |
