A narrow-band (4.26 µm) IR filter placed between the source and the detector (the filter can be eliminated by using a single-wavelength emitter such as a laser diode operating at <2 µm, or with a tuned emitter, but this can get quite expensive for the mid-IR range of 2–8 µm).
