Subject: Serb expulsion of most of the population The Serbs revoked the autonomy of Kosovo, a site of great historic and mythic importance in Serb history, and thereby finally alienated the Albanian majority in the province (it was the western European powers which had refused to allow Kosovo to join Albania in 1912-13 and again in 1918). A terrorist movement led to international negotiations over revived autonomy. The Serb refusal to accept a proposal (which they saw, probably rightly, as leading to the eventual secession of Kosovo) led in early 1999 to massive outside intervention by NATO and the Serb expulsion of most of the population.
