Subject: Off: A History of Common Russia Ok guys, this is an OFF OFF OFF but this forum has a lot of people on it and is a great way to reach a lot of people at one time. Here is the thing, I have a degree in Russian and EE History as many of you here know. When I came to Moscow to study Russian I also came with a plan to write a book of the common man's history of Russia. I have been collecting sotries for the past 3 years (mostly from the older generation). What I am looking for now are more stories but from the younger generations (under 70). The point of this is to collect stories about how Russia actually lived and lives today. It's like a living chronicle and in my opinion much more interesting than the lives of the tsars. Russians have a lot to say and have had some amazing experiences (ones no other people has had or will have) and I want to share them with the world. The text is in Russian at the moment. Which language I will try to publish it in, I don't know yet. If anyone is interested in having thier story, biography, memories, etc... included in this project, email me please at susanskelly79@gmail.com Thanks a million to all of you and thanks to our beloved Administrators for not deleting this ver offish off immediately! Susan |
Do yo want a whole life story or illustrative episodes? |
10-4 I am really glad you are interested in this project. Thanks! In any case, I am really looking for whatever people are willing to share. For whatever they think the world should remember. For whatever they want to tell. And no worries, mate, you can do it in Russian. :)))))) your choice |
It is a hard thing to write/speak about the self, not about the people around ... |
"a whole life"... in a short story :-) Nina, do you really think it differs so much from the Americans? :-) |
Достоевский обзавидуется... |
It all sounds odd. 'It has no theme,' Churchill would say. |
1. History has no theme - it's history. And actually the stories are divided into groups which have themes to make it readable 2. I am not asking for a whole life - but for what people want to tell. People have given whole lives and I have chosen what I think will be interestign for others to read 3. Russia is VERY and quite INCREDIBLY different from America. Trust me. 4. Doestoevsky is still the King :) |
10-4 it is difficult to talk about oneself. Would you like me to prompt you. I can ask you about specific things which I am still lacking or things I would like to include more of. Email me please. I sent an email to you at the one you have listed in your MT profile |
How much per word? ))) |
picking picking picking on the silly historian........... |
Вот почему-то я тоже о Достоевском и Чехове сразу вспомнила. :-) Но Нина, наверняка хочет внешнюю атрибутику - пионерские лагеря - Сталин- Хрущев - Брежнев? Nina, do you need it negative or positive or real? :-) |
Hm... You simply don't understand Churchill. And thank God, Russia is really different from America. |
I need it to be real of course. The point is that I love Russia and Russians and I want to let the world hear what they have to say instead of what the news and the history books might say. Why would I make it negative or positive? The negativity and positivity will come from the memoirs, not from me. And I don't want anything specific. I want what you want to tell. One old man (he is 75) about how his family ate when he was a child - one large bowl and they all have one spoon but no one can take a bite to eat before father does. You only get a spoon after Father has taken a spoon. If you take out of line he whacks the back of your hand with his spoon. I dont think this is negative or positive. this was someone else's reality. this is what i like. and of course i have heard a lot of war stories. and a lot of lager stories, but that was a reality as well..... |
d. thanks for the link but i am not going to copy and paste. this is a real work i want to publish when i finish with it. i think you missed the point |
and d, that link is nothing like what i am doing. i am starting to regret ever putting this post up. |
One thing I forgot to mention: Lately I have entertained the idea of people giving me some kind of photograph (from their life) to have reproduced in the book along with a history of the event of the photograph. |
Nina, please stop regretting, save your nerves! Just do what you are going to, those who are interested will write to you. You can not pay attention to every forum participant who is irritated after a work day and wants to needle you. (не знаю, как лучше сказать -язвить...(( ) |
galatea, Oh I am not regretting it that much. But I do have to defend my idea to some extent :))) In any case, would you happen to be interested in contributing? I think it would be lovely! язвить = taunt, jab at |
Susan, I think you are not quite getting the point. the site gives you a wonderful - in its authenticity - picture of modern Russian society, taken from within it takes some skill to interpret it correctly, though)) |
d. you are missing the point. the link is interesting but does make obsolete the book I want to write. And the link is for a Russian audience - I most likely want to write my book for an English audience. The book is a social history. It is not just a collection of stories. The stories are going to be accompanied by actual historical discussions of the events in it (as much as will be possible). Look, I am not going to argue with you. there are many sources available but I want to write this book and i WILL. |
а я подумала, что taunt - это не то. Слишком какое-то сильное, подумала. |
спасибо |
It's getting wierder and wierder with every step. Susan - what KIND of a book is it gonna be? A collection of sea stories? I may be missing the point here as well but i'm going head over heels trying to get what is it that you're about to do... Seems like a monkey chase to me... Are you sure you have it in you head all straightened out? |
It seems that you are looking for misterious Russian soul. But you won't find it questioning a hundred or two hundred strangers who were born in Russia, nor will you make it a real voice of Russia. At a glance, the project has no purpose, no structure, no logic. It's like a set of various stories on and about. Well, however, I may suggest what exactly, after all, you are trying to achieve and may advice you one professor and lecturer in foreign literature who can help you. She is very passionate about every single project that tells about people whoever they are. I think she can help you. |
Да что вы напали на Сьюзен? Вполне нормальное для социального историка исследование. У нас такие работы пока чаще встречаются в истории науки. Историю, в конце концов, тоже можно считать наукой. И она, как все прочие, не стоит на месте. |
GK Thank you for the kind words. And thank you for calling history a science (becasue it is). This is something many people dont realize (especially in countries where popular history has taken a strong hold. Redni Gel |
Well... its just the way a saying goes. Telling sea stories would mean telling long and boring stories of one's life. At least i've been told so by an american. Was my leg pulled? ))) |
we call them sea tales or stories i think... it's very colloquial.... but i think your leg is ok:) but you know, the stories people have told me are not boring - but i am a historian so most stories are not boring to me. all stories mean something. all stories have a point. and sometimes you get that guy who is just fascinating to listen to (so full of life! of passion!) |
