Subject: went on nuclear alert
Коллеги, в приведенном ниже фрагменте мне не совсем ясно последнее предложение, в частности фраза went on nuclear alert.
Заранее спасибо.
In 1967 the Soviets maintained fifteen divisions along the Chinese frontier; by 1972 this figure had risen to forty-four (compared with thirty-one in eastern Europe). To the Soviet leadership this seemed like 'encirclement' on a grand scale. Not until the late 1950s did the Soviets begin even a limited extension of influence, through arms supplies to a handful of states such as Egypt and India, and later to Cuba after the 1959 revolution. In most areas its influence was minimal and even where it was successful it was rarely able to sustain its position for long against American pressure. It was expelled from Egypt in 1972 and one of its few bases outside eastern Europe, Mogadishu in Somalia, was lost in 1977. The Soviet Union used force outside its sphere of influence in eastern Europe just once, in Afghanistan in 1979. In comparison the United States either engaged in war or other military operations, deployed troops and went on nuclear alert on nearly 300 occasions in the forty-five years after 1945.

К примеру, Соединенные Штаты Америки на протяжении 45 летнего периода после 1945 года около 300 раз осуществляли переброску войск (на заморские ТВД) или переход в состояние (повышенной) боевой готовности к ядерному удару.
